Simon Osuna

Jazz bassist and composer

Born in a small town north of Barcelona, I became very interested in music at a young age. After experiencing a live concert for the first time, I decided to become a musician. I started learning music by myself, but as my musical knowledge expanded and my fascination with music deepened, my quest for musical exploration led me to diverse cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, and New York.

I studied my bachelor's and master's degrees at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Besides that, I had the opportunity to study in New York City for a brief period and I had the privilege of taking lessons with jazz legends such as Buster Williams, Reggie Workman, and David Wong. I've been particularly drawn to the Jazz tradition and the music of the Great American Songbook.

I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a very prolific performing career thus far, having had the privilege to share the stage with esteemed musicians such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Harry Allen, Steve Cardenas, Philip Harper, Dwayne Clemons, Benny Benack III, Peter Beets, Jasper Blom, Simon Rigter, Gideon Tazelaar, and Ignasi Terraza.

Additionally, I’ve been one of the founders of the Fried Seven, a 1920s jazz music band. I am a member of the faculty at the Grappelli-Django Summer Camp, and my debut album will be released on May 14th.

"Too Soon, Too Late "

"The bass is the perfect accompanying instrument, with its ability to provide an essential harmonic and rhythmic foundation. Thanks to the contributions of heroes like Jimmy Blanton, Milt Hinton, Slam Stewart, Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and many more, the bass has become an instrument capable of virtuosic solo displays in addition to its traditional role as an accompanying instrument. Whenever a bassist makes the courageous choice to lead an ensemble and “call the shots,” it presents an interesting opportunity to hear how they balance featuring themselves as a soloist while still providing creative and meaningful accompaniment and support. Simon Osuna has done a beautiful job on his debut recording, striking that balance. He shows off his rich sound, impeccable technique, and sensitive musicality throughout — whether he’s playing an intro, walking, stating the melody, or soloing. Too Soon, Too Late is an exciting and important addition to the lineage of bass-led recordings."

“Too Soon, Too Late” has been recorded at Pinch Studios in NYC and will be released with the label Fresh Sound. This record showcases some of the finest musicians in the New York scene. Grant Stewart on Saxophone, Tommaso Perazzo on Piano and Willie Bowman on drums.
